Composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Don Black and first performed in 1979 this short, but well crafted, show still manages to entertain and delight.
Updated (email replaces letters) and with a new song (Dreams Never Run on Time) this show, or more properly perhaps 'song cycle', still only runs around 100 minutes (including interval) but is none the less packed with great tunes and trully poignant lyrics that deserve a larger audience than we saw attending last night's performance.
Unfortunately, last night, Claire Sweeney was indisposed so her understudy Ali James took to the stage .... plagued by an occasionally dicky mike and a maverick follow-spot operator she still did a sterling job and I heard no complaints from the audience. For me, the top notes sounded a little strident (could have been the mike) and it lacked the fluidity and passion she would gain from mroe practice but that is ever the understudies lot ....
A good night out and great to be home in time to read rather than just collapse into bed!
