This is the third time I have been lucky enough to see this show, and I was familiar with the CD long before a production made its way to the UK. So let me start off by admitting that, although this show is not for everyone, I am very much a fan.
Of course, being a fan of something can mean that you are easily disappointed if it doesn't live up to its potential - absolutely no problem here as the production is full of energy. I must say, I have rarely seen a touring musical delivered with such gusto by a fully committed cast. Although there are clearly some leading roles in this show it is very much an ensemble piece and requires everyone on stage to give of their best. Fortunately, the sound balance was such that every word of the lyrics was audible - this doesn't always happen for musical tours! The choreography is really entertaining and delivered crisply and with real passion by a truly commited cast - some of the tightest musical theatre numbers I have seen in years.
This is an extremely clever show with many references in the lyircs, music and choreography to films, contemporary culture and musicals from The King & I to Les Mis, Lion King and Wicked. If you are easily offended, or find South Park a bit much then simply do not go, personally I find the show refreshingly up-beat and hugely enjoyable. I hope I shall get to see the show again, not least for the fact that I shall be humming the tunes and smiling for days!
