I always enjoy watching, and listening to, the WNO and I found this production to be well up to standard! Simple set, glorious costumes, the ever lovely WNO Orchestra and some absolutely delightful singing. Ok, I did notice the reduced chorus, which is a shame, but the remaining members did sterling work filling the voids.
Whilst opera still needs those sections where the soloists are just stood on stage singing, this production involves a lot more "acting" than used to be the norm. The result is that an awful lot of the comedy is better pointed prompting the audience to laugh, regularly and enthusiastically. This was particularly true of Christina Gansch's Suzanna whose facial expressions are a real delight. Whilst I have seen this production before, it seemed to be fresh and vibrant and the hours flew by.
