Well, I am not of the Spongebob generation, though I have seen a couple of episodes, but I thought "why not, I'll give it a go" and I'm kind of glad I did. It might have helped if I'd watched a few episodes more first, but then this show wasn't aimed at me and the target audience loved it. Actually, I was quickly won over too by the sheer enthusiasm of the cast, the craziness of the set and the energy of the performance.
The audience included many really quite young children and this is quite a long show but neither performers nor audience flagged, so I reckon that counts as a success. The songs are great, the comedy genuinely funny and the story just enough to retain your interest without losing the younger followers. Tom Read Wilson's Squidward is great and Divina de Campo brings a fine SHeldon to stage but it is the energy of Lewis Cornay as Spongebob who really keeps this show moving.
Got kids who love Spongebob? Take them to this show, it could spark a lifelong love of theatre, if not, it will certainly give them (and you) a fun night out!
