Rachmaninov, Mahler-Werfel and Pejacevic - T1278875426

If the first-night audience was hostile to the 23-year-old Rachmaninov's First Symphony, history has been far kinder, embracing its ability to reimagine Russian musical tradition. John Storgards and the BBC Philharmonic are joined by mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly for turn-of-the-century songs by Alma Mahler-Werfel and Croatia's Dora Pejacevic, and the curtain rises with the overture to Weber's Grand Romantic and Fairy Opera, written for London's Covent Garden.Performer Sarah Connolly (Dame - mezzo-soprano). Company BBC Philharmonic. Conductor John Storgards.

Holst's The Planets - T1580663973

From broad visions of the universe to the intimacy of human relationships, the wonder of creation to the fragile moment of death, Ryan Wigglesworth and the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus take us through it all. Human loss is at the heart both of Strauss's tender, rapturous tone-poem Death and Transfiguration - an orchestral portrait of ‘the dying hours of a man' - and of Matthew Kaner's Pearl, a lament whose medieval text sees a grieving father glimpsing his daughter in the afterlife. Holst's The Planets leaves Earth far behind in its vivid, myth-inspired journey through our solar system in all its mysterious beauty.Performer Roderick Williams (baritone). Company BBC Symphony Chorus. Company BBC Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Ryan Wigglesworth.

Mahler, Schubert & Glanert - T622241036

Semyon Bychkov traces the evolution and genealogy of Austro-German music in a fascinating Prom featuring three works from three different centuries. Schubert's influence on Mahler is clear from the weary loveliness and fretful anxiety of Einsamkeit ('Loneliness'), heard here in an elegant orchestration by contemporary composer Detlev Glanert. Mahler's Fourth Symphony, bright with sleigh bells and innocent wonder, glances back to classical models from the vantage point of fin-de-si?cle Vienna, while Glanert takes Brahms's Fourth Symphony into the 21st century in his lyrical Weites Land ('Open Land').Performer Christina Gansch (soprano). Company BBC Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Semyon Bychkov.

Brahms's A German Requiem - T1121136935

Inspired by the death of his mother, Brahms's tender, consoling A German Requiem couldn't be further from Verdi's and Berlioz's settings of the standard Latin Mass text. It's the first of three Requiems this season marking 100 years since the end of the First World War. Richard Farnes makes his Proms debut directing the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, along with soloists Golda Schultz and Johan Reuter. Thea Musgrave's Phoenix Rising (marking the composer's 90th birthday this year) also traces a journey from darkness to light, enacting the conflict both spatially and musically in some of the composer's most dramatic writing.Performer Golda Schultz (soprano). Performer Johan Reuter (baritone). Company BBC Symphony Chorus. Company BBC Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Richard Farnes.

Mark Simpson, Dutilleux and Elgar - T196311647

In his First Symphony, unveiled in Manchester in 1911, Edward Elgar saw beyond the recession in which Britain was languishing to express a ?massive hope for the future'. The symphony's noble main tune appears fragile at first. But when it returns at the end, it's carried home by an ecstatic orchestra filled with a spirit of uplifting optimism. The BBC Philharmonic and its Chief Conductor also present the London premiere of a work by its Composer in Association Mark Simpson and the marriage of modernity and beauty that is Dutilleux's cello concerto ?Tout un monde lointain...'.Performer Johannes Moser (cello). Company BBC Philharmonic. Conductor Juanjo Mena.

Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique - T788537235

Sir John Eliot Gardiner's second appearance of the season showcases the work of the conductor's other period-instrument ensemble - the Orchestre R?volutionnaire et Romantique, specialists in 19th- and 20th-century repertoire. Gardiner's brisk and brilliant take on Beethoven's Fifth Symphony promises to find fresh energy within a familiar work - a Classical curtain-raiser to Berlioz's extravagant Symphonie fantastique, the height of Romantic excess, with its quasi-cinematic storytelling and vivid, ghoulish soundscapes. Finish time approx. 22:00Conductor John Eliot Gardiner.

National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain - T1597245055

The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain makes its annual visit to the Proms with a fiery and virtuosic programme of 20th-century orchestral showpieces, conducted by Proms regular Edward Gardner. A Russian first half sees BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Louis Schwizgebel take the lead in Prokofiev's youthful First Piano Concerto. Written while the composer was still a student, it brims with the same audacious energy that pulses through Stravinsky's great ballet Petrushka. Lutoslawski's vivacious Concerto for Orchestra closes the evening with still more primary-coloured, folkloric brilliance and drama. Finish time approx. 22:00Performer Louis Schwizgebel (piano). Company National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Conductor Edward Gardner.

Beethoven, Berlioz - T833901150

Mitsuko Uchida returns to the Proms after an absence of almost 20 years as the soloist in Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4, which overturned formal traditions by opening with a simple statement for solo piano. Musical ideas are tested to their limits in a conversation between keyboard and orchestra. The opium-fuelled obsessions, flower-like dancers, rural idyll, rolling tumbrel and danse macabre of Berlioz's 1830 gothic masterpiece Symphonie fantastique conclude the first of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra's two Proms (see also Prom 35) with Mariss Jansons, who celebrates his 70th birthday this year. Finish time: approx. 21:10Performer Mitsuko Uchida (piano). Company Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Mariss Jansons.

Wagner, Bruckner & MacMillan - T1362496281

Juanjo Mena presents a major world premiere before offering his acclaimed reading of a sonorous yet dangerously eruptive Bruckner symphony. First though, there's the emblematic love of Tristan and Isolde, expressed through music dark in sound and revolutionary in harmony. James MacMillan's works have enjoyed regular success at the Proms since the first performance of The Confession of Isobel Gowdie was given here in 1990. As with Bruckner, MacMillan's communicative power is often associated with expressions of faith, and the unveiling of Credo, has been keenly awaited. Finish time approx. 21:40Company Manchester Chamber Choir. Company Northern Sinfonia Chorus. Company Rushley Singers. Company BBC Philharmonic. Conductor Juanjo Mena.

Sibelius/Grieg & Nielsen - T971898380

Absent from the Proms since 2004, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is back with a new Chief Conductor, no stranger to these shores (as a former Music Director of the CBSO), and a suitably Nordic programme. Sibelius claimed to be offering the public 'pure cold water' with music like his magical Sixth Symphony - other composers were, he said, 'engaged in the manufacture of cocktails'. Nielsen's Fourth is a more extrovert piece, a celebration of the tenacity of the human spirit from the dark days of the First World War, complete with battling sets of timpani and earth-shattering climaxes. Between the two symphonies, critically acclaimed young German-Japanese pianist Alice Sara Ott makes her Proms debut in one of the most popular of all piano concertos. Finish time: approx. 21:45Performer Alice Sara Ott (piano). Company Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Conductor Sakari Oramo.
