Down the Lawson Track archiveDown The Lawson Track is a tribute in songs, music and stories, to the life of Henry Lawson (1867-1922), Australia's greatest short story writer and poet. Lawson was the first Australian-born writer to give a true and vivid picture of his country and its people. He can be compared to Rudyard Kipling for the integrity, compassion and humour of his writing and its wide popular appeal. He overcame deafness, hardship, alcoholism and depression, and these conditions informed his work. On his death in 1922 he was given a state funeral, an unprecedented honour, and enormous crowds turned out to pay their respects to this poet of the people.
