Details

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, The Electric Boogaloos are the group responsible for the creation and innovation of the funk styles of dance (popping, locking and boogaloo). Whilst these styles carried an identity separate from hip-hop, with roots in pure funk, the styles were widely adopted into the hip-hop movement. In the early 70s Boogaloo Sam created a set of movements, evolving each into their own style, subsequently forming The electric Boogaloos in 1977. Already legendary across California, an appearance in 1978 on the television show Soul Train cemented their cult position in Los Angeles and kickstarted a world-wide popping craze. Even a young Michael Jackson, after seeing the Soul Train performance, approached members of the Electric Boogaloos to choreograph both the Thriller and Beat It videos in 1982.
