Pianist Geri Allen effortlessly blends the hard swing of the jazz tradition with angular modern flourishes. Here in a solo setting she lets her creativity run free as she performs a live soundtrack to a film by acclaimed photographer Carrie Mae Weems. Surreal and poetic, this work explores what it means to be an African American woman, daughter and teacher in a deeply personal narrative. Pianist Tom Cawley leads this trio alongside bassist Sam Burgess and drummer Josh Blackmore. They update Bill Evans' quicksilver lyricism by adding hypnotic layers of melody and rhythm to crisscrossing time signatures. Tonight they play material from their new album, The Other Place.
