Aleksandr Dovzhenko, USSR, 1930] screened to a live choral accompaniment by members of NAKED VOICES and the GASWORKS CHOIR, devised and composed by Dee Jarlett. One of the last manifestations of silent cinema and widely regarded as one of the greatest, EARTH is a lyrical paean to the never-ending cycle of life, death and rebirth set in a Ukrainian village. Its maker Dovzhenko was a true son of the soil who was born into a Ukrainian peasant family. One of his earliest memories was of the 'music' of scythes harvesting the wheat and his film makes direct visual connection with his origins. Of course, there is a political message though the film met with official disapproval. It was, it seems, too much of a pastorale for Stalin but outside the USSR, EARTH was greeted as a masterpiece and its poetry has had an enduring influence. Tonight's newly-commissioned accompaniment by Dee Jarlett weaves together songs and themes from Eastern European folk music. It will be sung by members of NAKED VOICES -an internationally acclaimed acappella group that boasts an Edinburgh Fringe Festival 'Sell-out Award', and the GASWORKS CHOIR - Bristol's community choir. Tonight's performance has been made possible by funding from the PRS Foundation, the UK's largest independent funder purely for new music of any genre.
