The Third Man

T01263905507
1948, Vienna - once the jewel of the European crown - reels from invasion, reduced to a hellish dreamscape of ruins. The city is divided into sectors, each controlled by an Allied power - England, America, France and Russia - and there isn't a Nazi to be found. The war may be over but what follows doesn't feel like peace. In the chaos of liberation, black-marketeers run rings around the occupying forces. Disappearances and murders are commonplace as refugees and members of the old order jockey for position, reinventing themselves with false identities. Naive pulp novelist Rollo Martins arrives in Vienna to meet up with his old school-friend Dr Harry Lime, only to learn that he has been killed in a car accident. As he tries to unravel events around his friend's death, Martins is sucked into a world of corruption where racketeers play god as they traffic in essential drugs and medical supplies. Martins follows a macabre trail of intrigue, violence, and murder relentlessly pursuing the shadowy presence of 'the third man'.
