Her daring behaviour dictated the new morality of the 'flapper' and inspired many of Scott's fictional characters. Bye Bye Blackbird places Zelda in her room in a private institution in Baltimore.. Still beautiful, still hopeful, still wittily musing on her wild experiences during a crazy era. As her mental and physical health declines terrifying voices and hallucinations haunt her, revealing an obsession with their daughter Scottie, her failure to become a professional ballerina, a sexually inept marriage,infidelity, suicide attempts and artistic frustrations.
