"Celebrating the 175th year of the Chartist movement. The Forgotten sounds the silent voices of history in music, drama and song - the voices of working men, women and children who joined in protest against the injustices of the age, and who left their homes on a wet November evening and walked into history. Forgotten? No! Many Chartists sacrificed their lives in protest at the injustices of their age, some outside the Old Westgate Hotel, Newport, where statues commemorate the fallen. Popular with shoppers and weary travellers who enjoy sitting amongst them, how many know about the triumphs and despairs of their forebears, working people who helped them gain the vote? A redrafted version of The Forgotten, sounds these silent voices of our local history, in a tale told through music and song, a tale of passion, community and divided loyalties, of real people, who through their struggle seeded democracy in this country. The Forgotten is part of the annual Chartist convention commemorating Chartism in the region but also celebrating the nation's love of music and the voice.

A Chartist Musical for Newport - T0466200915

Full of hopes and dreams and leaving home for the first time, a young man and his younger sister arrive in a new town in search of work and walk straight into a maelstrom of protest, getting caught up in forces beyond their control. Sound familiar? Drawing on another time but familiar place. The Forgotten, a new musical is set in Newport 1839, yet tells an eternal classic story of lost love, divided loyalties and betrayal against the backdrop of the Chartist uprising. You'll be surprised how protest songs of the period lend themselves to the untamed rhythms of today and how the lives of our ancestors pulsed with the same desires and longings as our own. Funded and supported by the University of Wales, Newport, the Arts Council of Wales and The Riverfront.Director Richard Berry. Director Vanessa Dodd.
