Details

Based on the original story of The Vampyre (1819) by John Polidori (and not the garlic-hating Victorian incarnation from Bram Stoker's Dracula), this is the ghoulish tale of a dead man able to come back to life year on year after drinking the blood of the living by moonlight... First performed in 1828, when Vampire tales were particularly popular throughout England, France, and Germany, Marschner's work played all over Europe to great acclaim. If you've never heard his music before, prepare for a pleasant (and possibly shocking) surprise - an opera of dramatic musical contrasts, as fresh and accessible today as when it was first performed.
