Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Marat archiveJean-Paul Marat was a radical participant in the events of the French Revolution. Charlotte Corday was a beautiful young woman determined to put an end to his madness. In 1801 The Marquis de Sade, author and notorious libertine, was imprisoned charged with endangering public morals with his cruel sexual practices. In Weiss' work, the incarcerated de Sade stages a play about Marat's life and death performed by a cast of dangerous social misfits and the seriously mentally ill. The result is a terrifying pageant beneath which a wild orgy of violence threatens to explode.
