The Queen of Spades and I tackles the life and death of Alexander Sergeevitch Pushkin, Russia's greatest poet, notorious gambler and serial womaniser. In a darkly comic narrative Pushkin confronts his own psyche in a fictional character of his own creation: the obsessive Hermann, a reluctant card-player deceived by the ghost of the old countess whose death he has caused.
