Details

This opera tells the dramatic true story of a remarkable woman. Jamaican Mary Seacole was a pioneering, self-taught healer who travelled on her own initiative to the front line of the Crimean war to administer medical care and food to soldiers suffering not only from war wounds but also typhoid, scurvy and frostbite. She became a celebrity in Britain for the lives that she saved and as the first woman to have entered Sebastapol after the Russian defeat. The initiative with which she brushed aside Victorian boundaries of gender, class and race make for a fascinating life story.
