Operetta! The very name conjures up fun, lightness and laughter. After our very successful 'A Night at the Opera,' Opera UK now brings you something a little different. Operetta was developed in the middle of the 19th century as the antidote to serious opera and lasted until the development of the musical in the 1930's. During this time there was a wealth of wonderful melodies from such composers as Lehar, Strauss, Offenbach - and in England of course, there was Ivor Novello and Gilbert and Sullivan. Many operettas have stood the test of time, 'Die Fledermaus' and 'The Merry Widow' in particular - and Gilbert and Sullivan remain as popular as ever. For the anniversary of the 1st World War in 2014, we will be adding in poignant songs from the war era, including "Keep the Home Fires Burning" and "We'll gather lilacs." So sit back and enjoy an evening of favourites.
