The Sideshow Festival is planned to become an annual festival which takes over Berwick-within-thewalls to celebrate performance that pushes beyond conventional boundaries, linked with the opening of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Sideshow will eventually deliver an immersive festival ranging from theatrical installations in 18th century ice-houses to burlesque and cabaret performance, ground-breaking comedy to hauntingly beautiful site-specific dance - the only limit to the type of performance celebrated at Sideshow is that it must push beyond the confines of genre and expectation. For audiences, Sideshow will be one of the most intimate and unusual arts festivals in Europe. Strange and wonderful live installations and apparently impromptu performances will take place throughout the narrow medieval streets and Georgian buildings of our ancient walled town, including - it is hoped, the gun bastions on the vast Elizabethan ramparts. Every visitor will have a different experience during the Festival’s extraordinary three days and nights. You might find yourself stumbling upon the delights of a Victorian music hall, watching a Russian contortionist in a gun emplacement, or whirled into the glamour of an 18th century masked ball...
