A delicious satire about a system that promises much yet delivers little. A group of citizens caught up in Moscow's housing a shortage are lucky enough to be re-housed in a new apartment building in the desirable suburb of Cheryomushki. They arrive to discover that the apartments are not exactly as promised, and suspect the developer of sharp practice. Shostakovich's high-spirited and lyrical score pays humorous tribute to Tchaikovsky and 19th century ballet music as well as containing passing references to Beethoven and Russian popular melodies. semi staged.
