Born in London, Freddy began playing the piano at the age of only four and has developed a comprehensive repertoire of works and considerable experience as a soloist. In 1987 he won the first National Mozart Competition in England and in 1992 he won the BBC Young Musician of the Year. He opens the festival with this solo recital of Romantic music, which starts with Beethoven's intimate late E mjaor sonata Op.109 and continues with Schumann's Symphonic Etudes and his explosive Toccata. In the second half he performs Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, originally composed for solo piano but perhaps better known through the later orchestral arrangement made by Maurice Ravel.
