Philharmonia Orchestra archiveVasily Petrenko conducts a programme of orchestral showpieces, ending with Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances, the movements of which seem to summarise Rachmaninov's compositional life. The Symphonic Dances were among Rachmaninov's last works. Originally with programmatic movement titles of 'Noon', 'Twilight' and 'Midnight', the three movements almost seem to summarise Rachmaninov's compositional life, with quotations from his First Symphony and the Dies irae leitmotif that haunts so many of his works. The programme opens with one of Hindemith's most popular works, full of the dancing melodies of Weber set into a true showpiece for orchestra, and Sibelius's Violin Concerto forms the haunting and dark-hued heart of this concert.
