Details

Prince Rama and the Demons - is a ballet based on the Ramayana: the classic Indian story which tells of how Hanuman, the Monkey God, helps Prince Rama rescue his kidnapped wife Sita from the clutches of the evil King Ravana. Robert North's Prince Rama is a strikingly dramatic and original one-act ballet for young people which is inspired by Javanese and Balinese music, movement and legend and combines exotic costumes, traditional instruments, masks and shadowplay. Prince Rama features 15 dancers, an on-stage narrator and musicians and lasts approximately 1hr 5mins with no interval. Scottish Ballet website.

User Review: 11Jan01: Prince Rama and the Demons is conceived specially for young audiences, though it is equally appealing to adults. The children all around me seized every opportunity to clap along with the rhythms. North s choreography is a clever combination of ballet and Indonesian movement; the costumes by Monia Torchia, and masks by Panaro, are exotic and beautiful.
