Mayuri Boonham’s vibrant new dance company ATMA uses classical Bharatanatyam movement and contemporary vocabulary to create eloquent, unpredictable dance. For Sivaloka and Ghatam, the company’s first two works, Mayuri has brought together an international team of award-winning collaborators. Inspired by the dramatic, rock-cut Elephanta temple in India, Sivaloka explores one of the central ideas in Hindu philosophy; Ghatam was inspired by American composer Steve Reich’s iconic Drumming, with a score played by dancing drummers, featuring the beautiful and unique sound of the ghatam, a classical Indian percussion instrument.
