Mahagonny Songspiel/Trouble in Tahiti/Walking Not Driving archiveMahagonny Songspiel, by Weill with libretto by Bertholt Brecht, was written in the 1920s. It is a modern-day morality tale where God banishes citizens of an imaginary city to hell, whereupon they say they are there already. Themes of greed and money are present too in Trouble in Tahiti, by Bernstein, the story of a suburban housewife's dream of escape set against a backdrop of commercialisation. Bernstein uses advertising jingles sung by a jazz trio mixed with popular and classical vocal styles. Walking Not Driving - world premiere.
