The incomparable violinist and director Pinchas Zukerman leads the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada in a programme which commemorates one hundred years since the first Canadian troops arrived in the UK to assist the war effort. Vaughan Williams' haunting Fantasia sets the scene, recalling a beautiful, unspoilt England, and is followed by a contemporary offering from Canadian Composer John Estacio: his changeable and flighty piece 'Brio' is tinged with loss and mourning. Bruch's impassioned and at times heart-breaking violin concerto precedes Elgar's lament, composed as storm clouds gathered above a world on the brink of darkness. Finally, Beethoven's 7th Symphony brings the dawn, moving from dark orchestral colours to a finale which is full of the joy of life.
