Details

Jamaican-born Garth Fagan, is the highly acclaimed Olivier and Tony award winning choreographer of Broadway's The Lion King, and is one of the great reformers of modern dance. His experimental choreography and technique draws on many dance forms from Afro-Caribbean to classical. Garth Fagan Dance has been cited for its excellence and originality with a New York Governor's Art Award. The Company's 15 dancers are renowned for their individuality, their natural, unstylised approach, and their sheer physical virtuosity. Prelude (Discipline is Freedom) displays the company's virtuosity and introduces the audience to the dancers' and to Fagan's technique through movement. The South African-inspired Woza, Zulu for 'come celebrate', is an affirmation of human life with evocative power of a poem and an exuberant finale. The music for Woza is by South African composer Lebo M, who also created the music for The Lion King. Garth Fagan Dance - Programme 1 - Prelude/Woza website.
