Contemporary dance. Richard Alston, Artistic Director of The Place, the UK's leading centre for contemporary dance, is internationally recognised as one of the most influential and inspiring choreographers in British dance. For Richard Alston Dance Company's return home this year, the company has prepared an exciting programme containing two brand new pieces, Isthmus and Madcap. Alston is fascinated by the music of Jo Kondo, which moves with rapid light rhythms, both sharp and delicate. Alston's Isthmus is a dance of nimble and breathtaking precision. Following his most recent commission by Scottish Ballet to mark the Olympics, Martin Lawrance has now created Madcap a startlingly original new choreography with the music of New York collective, Bang on a Can All-Stars. Shimmer is danced to the sun-drenched music of Ravel played live. Fashion designer Julien Macdonald's fabulous, jewel-encrusted cobweb costumes illuminate dazzling streaks of limpid choreography.
