This lecture, postponed from Autumn 2003, will explore relations between the Islamic East and the Christian West during the 16th century. Dr Brotton will reveal that the contemporary understanding of Islam was far more complex than has been realised, as suggested in the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries.
