The intriguing paradox of silent movie opera is explored in this presentation of a silent-movie version of the most popular of all operas, Carmen. Made in 1910, the movie borrows from the spectacular staging and melodramatic style of opera to give form and status to the art-form of film. Silent Movie operas would have been presented with live musical accompaniment. In this work-in-progress showing the film will be screened with live performers presenting a newly created musical score which establishes a contemporary relationship to the film, exploring a modern response to the conventions of opera and early film, and our obsession with the themes of Carmen. This project is being developed with the support of the ENO Studio.
