Away from home and in unfamiliar surroundings, the young Stephen Dedalus starts to question his Catholic upbringing as he reaches towards a vaster spiritual and artistic existence. James Joyce's semi-autobiographical work is an early example of his evocative stream-of-consciousness style, exemplified by later works Ulysses and Finnegans Wake.
