A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man archiveIreland at the end of the 19th Century. Political and religious hostilities are dividing a passionate population. Away from home and in unfamiliar surroundings, the young Stephen Dedalus starts to question his Catholic upbringing as he reaches towards a vaster spiritual and artistic existence. James Joyce's semi-autobiographical work is an early example of his evocative stream-of-consciousness style, exemplified by later works Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. First serialised in ?The Egoist' magazine between 1914 and 1915, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man was published in book form in 1917.
