Emergence-See! archiveAn explosive new play where rhythm, rhyme and remembrance reverberate, Emergence-See! is a one-man meditation on race, class, history and society. It's 2006 and a slave ship has emerged from the Hudson River in New York, right in front of the Statue of Liberty - everyone is thrown into disarray, and everyone has something to say about it. White people are feeling compelled to apologise to black colleagues for the sins of their ancestors; news crew are scrabbling to find 'slave-ologists' to provide analysis; Rodney and his brother are rushing to the scene after learning that their mentally ill father has climbed aboard. Meanwhile, up in Harlem, a poetry slam begins, a Jamaican man muses in the park about the colour of bones and a tour guide nonchalantly leads visitors around a slavery museum. Daniel Beaty assumes forty diverse personalities as they collide in an intricately woven urgent, witty and moving exploration of our shared humanity and what it means to be free.
