Fergus Lamont archiveBorn in the slums in a town in the west of Scotland, at the turn of the 20th century, Fergus Lamont believes himself to be the illegitimate son of an aristocrat. He plans to reclaim his inheritance and re-position himself in the world as a soldier, a poet, and a member of the aristocracy. The story spans over 40 years in Fergus' life, recounting his journey to the top and back down again. It tells a tale of vanity, success, and betrayal, and shines its own cynical light on Scotland and the class issues of the day (and today). Arguably one of the finest novels ever written in Scotland, Fergus Lamont has a tragic dimension as well as a mordant wit. Jenkins' scathing humour offers a forensic exploration of the Scottish psyche.
