In a decaying school on the outskirts of Liverpool, four very different teachers are learning that life very often has a lesson-plan all of its own. For many people; staff and pupils alike; school can be a real uphill struggle. What can a teacher say to a 14 year old boy whose mother is an alcoholic prostitute? How do you deal with a sexually-active 13 year old girl whose boyfriend is older than you? And how exactly do you get a stray dog out of the playground without rupturing a kidney?
