Originally written for the first Malvern Festival in 1929, when a special train was put on to bring more than sixty critics from London, The Apple Cart was a triumphant success. Indeed, W B Yeats writing at the time said 'I imagine that Shaw has made the sensation of his life'. Set towards the end of the twentieth century, The Apple Cart portrays a vision of Britain in which the country is little more than a staging post for the movement of foreign capital. The heart has gone out of politics and into moneymaking and only a tiny fraction of the electorate can be bothered to vote.
