The Apple Cart archiveOriginally written for the first Malvern Festival in 1929, when a special train was put on to bring more than sixty critics from London, The Apple Cart was a triumphant success. Indeed, W B Yeats writing at the time said 'I imagine that Shaw has made the sensation of his life'. Set towards the end of the twentieth century, The Apple Cart portrays a vision of Britain in which the country is little more than a staging post for the movement of foreign capital. The heart has gone out of politics and into moneymaking and only a tiny fraction of the electorate can be bothered to vote. When the cabinet threatens to resign en masse if the King does not give up the royal veto, the King decides the time is ripe to upset the apple cart.
