The Beggars of York archiveThere's no point in reporting it to anyone. - No one will listen. - We're only beggars. - In spite of democracy - no one will listen - to folk like us. What happens when mental illness, addiction and begging are part of daily life? What happens when you realise no-one is going to help you? What happens to ordinary people when there is nowhere else to go? Through the chaotic bustle of living, sleeping and begging, Nick, Pearl and Paul tell their stories of life on the streets of York. Renowned veteran York poet Don Walls marks his playwriting debut with this sharp, poignant and defiant record of an ongoing chapter in York's social history. The play is based on the life and experiences of Don's late son, Peter, who lived on the streets of York for 30 years. Part eulogy, part performance-poetry and part expos? of the criminal justice system, this brand new, homegrown tour-de-force will make you reconsider what happens on the very street outside your window.
