The Camp archiveIn 1929 the government set up Labour Camps for the long-term unemployed. 'Volunteers' could choose a 13-week stint of heavy manual labour - or lose their dole. Set in 1938, The Camp explores a fascinating but forgotten bit of history. An out of work actor, a naive young Welshman and a Manchester spiv are forced to share a hut under the watchful eye of Browning. As the unlikely trio challenge each other's ideals and prejudices, a complex power struggle ensues. The experience of The Camp changes lives forever. Forthright, passionate and engaging, with full-on human warmth, The Camp has m any contemporary resonances.
