The great Barcelona debate of 1263 occurred in a period of growing pressure against the Jews of Spain. Rabbi Moses ben Nachman, defending Judaism against the convert Pablo Christiani, aroused the anger of the Inquisition. Yet King James, warrior and lover, chairing the debate, was struck with admiration for the Rabbi.
