CORONAVIRUS: All UK venues closed on 16th March 2020 but restrictions were lifted on 19th July 2021 with venues free to run shows to full capacity audiences after that though there are still issues with company members being forced to self-isolate on being 'pinged'. In September it is possible that a COVID vaccination certificate (or exemption) may be mandated for entry. Please note that iUKTDb archive listings between March 2020 and July 2021 may not be accurate as we did not receive details of all rescheduled and cancelled shows.
Set in the dis-utopian republic of Gilead the government exercises control over all aspects of life. Schools have been turned into training camps for women to reprogram them to the new society's extreme religious ways of thinking. The authorities use 'the angels' - the military state force - to institute a restrictive and often violent iron control. Childbirth is low and society revolves around reproduction. Offred's function is as a handmaid, a reproductive tool, a 'walking womb'. Assigned to The Commander and despised by his wife, she falls in love with his chauffeur, Nick. Her identity, her child and her former life have been stolen and eradicated. The play explores the handmaid's struggle to remain true to herself and her illicit feelings for Nick, against the system that threatens her person and her sanity.Performers Claire Carpenter, Jonathan Kemp, Melanie Revill, Vivienne Rowdon.
