Probably a military drop-out, the reprobate Zaytsev, a conman and compulsive philanderer, spends his 'night before the trial' in an ice-cold, bed-bug infested wayside station before travelling to court the next day, where, he is convinced, he will find himself sentenced by the jury to a hellish existence in the wilds of Siberia.
