The Rent Strike - Battle of Govan archiveIn 1915 while the nation was engaged in a war with Germany the people of Govan were engaged in a war with unscrupulous landlords. As the workers flooded into Glasgow to aid in the war effort, rent prices soared. Govan's women-folk refused to pay the increases. When sheriff's officers responded they were met by the terrifying sight of a horde of angry women armed with flour-bags, whitewash and mops. This piece is the second in Cran's Govan Trilogy. The first The 'Daphne' Disaster, recounted events surrounding a shipbuilding tragedy which occurred in 1883 on the Clyde when 124 workers drowned.
