The Six of Calais archiveIn this short play, where emotions run high and the fight for honour prevails, the medieval war story of Edward III's siege of Calais and its subsequent end is told. Inspired by Shaw's visit to France in 1917, the story comes originally from the Chronicles of Jean Froissart documenting the events of the Hundred Year's War between France and England. Shaw wrote the piece especially for the Open Air Theatre, where it was performed as part of its programme in July 1934.
