A celebration of the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria's birth, and the birth, during her reign, of Christmas as we know it today. The Victorian Christmas was a time of magic, hope and goodwill to all people. Prince Albert introduced the Christmas tree to England in 1846, the first greeting cards were sent in 1861, Charles Dickens revelled in his seasonal stories, culminating in the greatest tale of all, A Christmas Carol. Plus Mrs Beeton was on hand to give advice on the culinary delights of roast turkey, plum puddings and mince pies! Celebrate the delights of Christmas past, in the company of Queen Victoria, Charles Dickens, Mrs. Beeton, Thomas Hardy, Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Gilbert and Sullivan. The festive spirit is enhanced by the familiar and much-loved music of Handel, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Vivaldi, Bizet, Scott Joplin and Debussy with traditional tunes and carols.Presented byClive Conway Productions. Performer Robert Powell. Performer Susan Jameson. Performer Clive Conway (flute). Performer Christine Croshaw (piano).

A Victorian Christmas is a fun and festive celebration of the Yuletide our ancestors would have known. Following highly successful tours in 2011 and 2012, acclaimed historical entertainment company Blast From The Past invite you to join them in 2013 for an evening of music, song, stories and drama from the time of Dickens and Hardy. The cast of musicians and actors invite you to join them for some of your favourite carols (with songsheets provided) as well introducing you to some more obscure but no less beautiful festive songs from the 19th century. They also perform a festive masked play based upon a traditional English folk tale. Finally, there's a Christmas tale of the court of King Arthur - a figure revived in the Victorian era by authors and poets such as Scott and Tennyson. Featuring damsels in distress, deeds of chivalry, an epic quest and of course a happy ending the tale is told in two parts across the two halves of the show.Presented byBlast from the Past.
