It is World Down Syndrome Day on Saturday 21st March and on the same day The Bristol Hippodrome Groups and Access team (aka The Flogs - Fabulous Ladies & Lad of Groups!), including ex team members, will walk a very special 10 mile route around Bristol to raise money for Ups and Downs South West. This charity supports children and young people with Down Syndrome, their parents, families and all those professionals involved in their care, health and education across the whole of the South West. Ups and Downs are a parent led charity seeking to support and enable children and young people who have Down Syndrome to enjoy happy, healthy, fulfilling lives in which they are able to reach their full potential. They provide direct support and home visits to families and run information and training days, pre-school groups, youth clubs and family events alongside a telephone helpline and a schools advisory service. They currently support over 500 families and 200 schools across the region. Down Syndrome is quite simply, the presence of an extra chromosome in the body's cells. Instead of 23 pairs, individuals with Down Syndrome have a little extra and carry an additional chromosome 21 - hence choosing the 21st day of the 3rd month as Down Syndrome Day! Down Syndrome is not a disease. Children and Adults with Down Syndrome do have learning difficulties but this varies enormously from individual to individual, just as the abilities of all people vary. The route will incorporate 21 Ups and Downs around central Bristol - to represent the charity name that we are supporting! A mixture of buildings and landscapes, the Ups include The Premier Inn, Brandon Hill and Cabot Tower, Bristol Zoo Gardens, Constitution Hill, Radisson Blu hotel, St Mary Redcliffe Church spire and Christmas Steps. Of course most of the Ups are also Downs, but they're also represented by Bridge Valley Road, the Bristol Downs themselves, and our own Upper Circle (aka the Gods) where the Flog Slog will begin. ?This will be our third Flog Slog, and previously we've collected for the Harvey Hext Appeal and Cancer research UK. "This time round it's for a charity really close to our hearts as it affects Tina, one of our team members directly. Tina's son, Brodie, has Down Syndrome and she and her family know first-hand how important this charity's support can be" Trish Hodson, Groups and Access Manager. "We'll be taking photos all along the route and posting them live on our theatre Facebook pages and Twitter feeds. It would be great if people could look out for us along the way and give us a wave, or better still a pound!" The final two performances of Wicked - the musical are happening on the 21st March too and the Production Company have kindly agreed to let the staff collect for Ups and Downs South West after the matinee/both shows on this day. After all, the main song of the show "Defying Gravity" couldn't be more appropriate really
