In Othello Desdemona loses her handkerchief, and eventually her life as a result. Hundreds of years earlier, Arab writers had composed verses in honour of handkerchiefs. They were often given as gifts, but we have no record of Elizabeth I's reaction when she received one embroidered by the mother of the Ottoman Sultan. Why were they considered so important in medieval Islamic society?
