Details

John Arden is one of the most important of the British dramatists to emerge in the mid-twentieth century. He was resident playwright at the Department from 1959-60 where The Happy Haven was first performed, but his work first came to prominence at the Royal Court during George Devine's pioneering seasons. His play, Sergeant Musgrave's Dance (1965), is widely regarded as a modern classic. His views on politics and theatre are strongly held, and following an unresolved dispute with the RSC in 1972, he vowed never again to work in large British subsidised theatres. Now based in Ireland he writes for radio and his novel Silence Amongst the Weapons was short-listed for the Booker Prize.
