When Mateo, who loves Conchita, slips some money to her mother, Cochita is furious and insists that they leave Seville. Six months later, when Mateo finds her performing a risqué dance in a restaurant, an altercation ensues and Conchita promises that tomorrow she will welcome him with open arms. But the next day, rather than admit him, she offers her hand to kiss through the railings and otherwise teases him. Mateo is driven wild with despair and jealousy. The next day, Mateo locks all the doors and violently throws Conchita to the floor. She attempts to stab him. Furiously he beats her about the shoulders, willing her to suffer as he has. Conchita is at last convinced of the intensity of his feelings for her. They pledge eternal love.
