In the French village of Domremy, news arrives that the French army has been vanquished by the approaching English. Joan La Pucelle urges everyone to trust in the living Saviour, She accurately prophesies the death of Salisbury, the English leader, and departs to save France. When the king (Charles VII) hears how Joan has led the French in a rout of the enemy, he places the army under her command. Near the city of Rheims Joan spares the life of Lionel, a Burgundian knight. Later, the King appears accompanied by Joan. Her distraught father accuses Joan of sorcery, but she remains silent. When the Cardinal demands an answer, Joan flees to the forest where a choir of angels foretells her death. The English arrive and, slaying Lionel, take Joan prisoner. As the fire is lit in the square, the populace mock Joan and the angels invite her to heaven.
