Les Fourberies de Scapin (Scapin's Trickery)
The comedy was first performed in 1671 and was something of a failure but then so were The Misanthrope
and The Miser
. Comedie Francaise was formed in 1680 when Moliere's own troupe of actors merged with those of the Hotel de Bourgogne. Scapin's Trickery
is a delightful comedy of manners, where the eponymous hero, one of Moliere's resourceful valets, interferes with and manipulates the affairs of his master with the usual complicated and hilarious consequences.
