Second Tenor

If you sing tenor and have the waistline of Pavarotti but not his heroic voice, what sort of parts are you likely to get? Not merely servants and messengers, as it happens, for there are some fascinating character parts loitering behind the juvenile leads. Graham Billing has played a number of them - in operas by composers as varied as Smetana, Tchaikovsky and Puccini - and is more than happy to reminisce about his experiences.
