Rehearsed Reading. Best known as a letter writer, Griffiths adapted Goldoni’s The Bourru Bienfaisant to make her play. From these Commedia dell’Arte roots she offers a sharply comedic play where the choleric old man, the lovers and the buffoons of the original are updated to offer a piece whose emphasis switches to contemporary English society and the author’s palpable dissatisfaction with it.
